EA288 diesel engines do not contain defeat software, VW confirms

Volkswagen (VW) has confirmed that early versions of its EA288 diesel engines do not contain the illegal defeat software used to cheat emissions tests.

It was reported last week that VW was investigating the possibility that Euro 5 compliant versions of the EA288 engine, sold from 2012, also contained the software found in the EA 189 engine at the centre of the scandal.

However, VW have now released a statement assuring that the EA288 is legal: "Volkswagen confirms today that no software constituting an improper defeat device as defined in law is installed in vehicles with EA288 EU5 as well as EU6-engines in the European Union. Consequently, new vehicles of the Volkswagen Group offered within the European Union with those engines comply with legal requirements and environmental standards."

VW has also stressed that all Euro 6 compliant versions of the EA288 are legal and do not contain the defeat software.
