Rightcharge urges fleets to focus on ‘blended average’ charging costs
Rightcharge has published its 2026 Annual State of Fleet Charging Report, drawing on real-world data from tens of thousands of charging sessions and more than 1,000 megawatts of energy delivered to UK fleets during 2025.
The report sets out key insights and recommendations aimed at helping electric fleets reduce costs, including encouraging fleet managers to track their “blended average unit rate” as a benchmark when assessing costs.
One of the report’s strongest findings is the widening cost gap between public and home charging. Although public charging accounted for just 27% of charging sessions in 2025, it represented 57% of total fleet charging spend. The average cost of public charging stood at 81p per kWh, compared with just 25p per kWh for home charging, meaning businesses relying heavily on the public network are paying more than three times as much for the same energy.
The report also identifies Smart Charging, which involves timing charging sessions to coincide with cleaner and cheaper electricity, as a key opportunity. While 77% of home charging already takes place during off-peak hours, only 43% of public charging sessions do the same.
By shifting more charging to off-peak periods, fleets could cut charging-related emissions by up to a third. Additional savings are possible for drivers on dedicated EV tariffs, where electricity prices can fall to as low as 6–7p per kWh, delivering potential annual savings of up to £1,300 per driver.
Rightcharge is also encouraging fleet managers to adopt a new benchmark when assessing costs. Rather than focusing on occasional high-cost public charging sessions, the company argues businesses should track their “blended average unit rate” – the average cost across all charging activity.
In 2025, the average blended unit rate across the Rightcharge platform was 40p per kWh, equivalent to around 11p per mile. This compares favourably with diesel at 15p per mile and petrol at 17p per mile, reinforcing the long-term cost advantage of electric vehicles.
Charlie Cook, Founder and CEO of Rightcharge, said, “Transitioning to an electric fleet brings huge benefits, but optimising your charging can help you save even more money. Our latest data shows a big difference in charging costs across the UK fleets. We’ve published this report to give fleet managers the benchmarks that they need to see the true value of electric vehicles.”
