The second generation of Toyota’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the new Prius Plug-in has made its world debut at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

The improved plug-in offers a better EV performance with an extended range of 31 miles, and a maximum speed of up to 84mph. The new model builds on the strengths of the original Prius and includes a similarly responsive, intuitive, quiet and refined hybrid system.

The latest generation also boasts a bigger 8.8kW/h lithium-ion battery pack allowing for longer driving ranges for a single tank of fuel. It also signified a significant improvement in fuel consumption with an estimated average figure of 202mpg, producing a CO2 figure of just 32g/km.

The plug-in’s recharging time is also said to take around two hours and 20 minutes.

Furthermore, the car possesses a regenerative braking system which capture kinetic energy to produced when braking converting it into electric power for storage in the battery, helping to reduce fuel consumption further.

The Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform offers a more engaging driving position by giving the car a lower centre of gravity resulting in a more precise and responsive handling.
