Rigid hybrid truck system to be trialled on UK roads

Reductions of around 15-30 per cent in fuel consumption and associated emissions are expected.

A commercial vehicle regenerative braking hybrid system will be trialled on UK roads in the coming weeks.

It will mark the first time that a rigid lorry has been transformed into a hybrid, borrowing similar Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) technology to that seen in Formula 1 and other forms of motor racing.

French company Adgero will work with fleet services Fraikin to fit its UltraBoost hybrid system to an Iveco Euro 6 test truck with the aim to reduce emissions and offer fuel savings for rigid commercial vehicles.

The test vehicle will be employed by an international logistics company for use on its UK routes, said to include Greater London. In addition, the Iveco testbed will also carry a compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion supplied by Alternatech in Southampton.

Adgero unveiled a KERS-fitted trailer unit at the UK’s 2016 Commercial Vehicle Show in April.
