Germany launches €2.17 billion electric car promotion strategy

News

German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel has announced he will commit €2.17 billion to programs that incentivise electric cars.

Not many details have been released so far but some of the money is reported to go to subsidies for the purchase of new electric cars. The proposal also calls for expanding the number of public charging stations in Germany and encouraging government offices to use more electric cars.

Currently, Germany has 2,400 operating AC charging sites and around 100 DC fast-charging sites, which will be funded under the German budget without tax increases.

Germany’s goal is to have one million plug-in cars on its roads by 2020.
