VW to launch 30 EVs to reposition itself as leader in green transport

Matthias Mueller, chief executive of Volkswagen, has announced that the brand plans to launch 30 all-electric models in order to realign itself as a pioneer of ‘green’ transport.

Mueller has said the group hopes electric cars would account for around 20-25 per cent of its carmaker’s annual sales, by 2025.

The news comes as the latest figures have shown that sales growth of VW branded cars has continued to fall behind European rivals.

The chief executive said VW would place ‘special emphasis will be place on e-mobility. The group is planning a broad-based initiative in this area: it intends to launch more than 30 purely battery-powered electric vehicles over the next ten years.’

Speaking to reporters at VW headquarters in Wolfsburg, Mueller added: "This will require us - following the serious setback as a result of the diesel issue - to learn from mistakes made, rectify shortcomings and establish a corporate culture that is open, value-driven and rooted in integrity."
