11 UK companies among first to gain ‘Go Ultra Low’ status

11 UK organisations are included in the first selection of companies which have gained the ‘Go Ultra Low Company’ status, after adopting electric vehicles (EVs) in their fleet.

The scheme has been launched by the Go Ultra Low Campaign, in a bid to encourage more UK businesses to switch to electric cars. Since the launch, it has reported a 36 per cent increase in the number of EVs being registered, compared the previous year.

The project encourages companies to make a minimum of five per cent of their fleet EVs by 2020. In particular, Microsoft UK has already achieved this feat, with six per cent of its fleet accounting for EVs. This figure is expected to rise to 20 per cent by 2017.

Transport minister Andrew Jones said: “The UK is a world leader in the uptake of low emission vehicles, and our long-term economic plan is investing £600 million by 2020 to improve air quality, create jobs and achieve our goal of every new car and van in the UK being ultra-low emission by 2040.”
