Lack of electric vehicle training for technicians

News

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has warned the motor retail sector is failing to train enough technicians in electric technology to keep pace with growing electric vehicle (EV) sales.

According to Motor Trader, at the moment, only one per cent of all technicians have been trained to work on EVs and almost all of them work for franchised dealers and not independent garages.

The IMI has said that the UK will not be able to keep up with global competition for ultra-low emission vehicle adoption if more technicians are not given the training required.

It also said there were insufficient charging stations being created in the UK and their number grew 16 per cent since last year.
