Certas Energy acquires key Scottish truck stop

Certas Energy has completed the acquisition of the Ecclefechan truck stop in Lockerbie, Scotland.

Located at junction 19 of the A74(M), the Ecclefechan site sits on a critical logistics corridor between Scotland and England, with around 16,000 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) travelling along the motorway each day.

Sustainability is central to the Ecclefechan site’s future. Powered entirely by a 100kW wind turbine, the facility generates surplus electricity that is fed back into the national grid, contributing to Scotland’s renewable energy output. Plans are also in place to install electric HGV charging infrastructure, supported by funding from the Scottish Government.

The site features 217 parking spaces and is integrated with the SNAP account network, allowing drivers to access secure parking and pay using a widely adopted cashless system.

Certas Energy has maintained a presence at Ecclefechan for several years, having opened an HGV refuelling bunker there in 2019.

Mike Heaton, Head of Estate Development at Certas Energy says: “By acquiring a key Scottish truck stop site into the Certas Energy network, we’re not just expanding our footprint - we’re helping to shape the next generation of safe, secure and sustainable truck stops and roadside services.

“Powered by wind, offering upcoming e‑HGV charging and major improvements planned, this site embodies the innovation and investment needed to support the UK’s transition to a lower‑carbon freight future.”

All 20 employees at the site will be retained as part of the acquisition, with the potential for further recruitment as the site develops.
