Areas with most electric vehicle charging points revealed

New research from comparethemarket.com reveals the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging hotspots, by looking at how many public charging points there are per 100 electric cars in each local authority.

Outside of London, Christchurch in Dorset is the area in the UK with the most electric vehicle charging points, with 85.5 charging stations per 100 electric vehicles.

West Somerset and Fermanagh & Omagh are in second and third place respectively.

According to the research, there are just two areas in the UK without a single public charging point: the Isles of Scilly and Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria.

London is some way ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to charging infrastructure, with 28.8 charging points per 100 electric cars (compared to the national average of 12.5).

Aside from the City of London (which was excluded due to its low resident population), Wandsworth is the London borough with the highest availability of chargers, with 34 per 100 electric vehicles.

Outer London boroughs have the fewest charging points, with Harrow having the least with just 14. This works out as 1.7 per 100 electric vehicles.

Dan Hutson, head of motor insurance at comparethemarket.com, said: “With the government aiming to make the switch to zero-emission electric vehicles by 2035, it’s interesting to see which areas in the UK are leading the way when it comes to the number of electric vehicles and public charging points.

“Concerns around slow charging times have been addressed with the introduction of rapid public charging points, allowing standard electric vehicles to be charged within an hour. However, not having enough charging points to supply all electric vehicles on the road is a key concern for people who have not yet made the switch to an electric car. In order to meet the 2035 deadline, substantially more charging points will need to be introduced over the next 15 years to meet the predicted demand.”
