Mitsubishi confirms UK return with new Outlander PHEV
Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed it will re-enter the UK market in summer 2026, launching the latest-generation Outlander plug-in hybrid (PHEV) alongside the new Series 7 Mitsubishi L200 double-cab pick-up.
The move marks a comeback for the Japanese brand after it paused new model development for Europe and withdrew from the UK in 2020. The Colt Car Company, Mitsubishi’s former UK importer, ceased trading in 2021, with aftersales and parts operations later taken on by International Motors.
Sharon Townsend, head of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said the brand is looking ahead with confidence: “We are excited to announce the two new Mitsubishi models that will go on sale in the UK in summer 2026. While the Outlander PHEV and L200 are well-known and highly regarded names here, the vehicles we are introducing represent a significant step forward in design, technology and performance.”
First introduced in 2014, the original Outlander PHEV was a pioneer in the segment, achieving more than 50,000 UK registrations. The new model has been redesigned from the ground up and is larger in every dimension, measuring 2.5cm longer, 6.2cm wider and 3.8cm taller than before.
There's an upgraded 2.4-litre petrol engine working with a traction battery and twin electric motors driving the front and rear wheels. The EV-based four-wheel-drive system delivers over 300hp and a total driving range of more than 500 miles.
Mitsubishi’s L200 pick-up has been a familiar sight in the UK since the mid-1980s, with cumulative sales exceeding 180,000 units across multiple generations. The new Series 7 is described by the manufacturer as the most capable L200 yet.
It features a heavily revised 2.4-litre two-stage bi-turbo diesel engine, delivering increased power and torque compared with the outgoing model. The Super Select 4WD-II system offers multiple drivetrain options, including two- and four-wheel drive, centre differential lock and low-range gearing.
Drivers can also choose from seven driving modes: Normal, ECO, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock.
Further details on UK pricing, specifications and exact on-sale dates will be announced closer to the 2026 launch.
