Kerbside EV charging rollout gathers pace
Char.gy charge point

Electric vehicle charging operator char.gy has installed its 5,000th public charge point, marking a milestone in the expansion of on-street charging infrastructure across the UK.

The landmark charger was installed in Brighton & Hove, where the city council is planning to deploy around 6,000 charge points across the city, making it currently the largest on-street charging rollout outside London.

The announcement comes as councils across the UK continue to expand charging provision for residents without access to private driveways. According to industry estimates, around 40% of UK households do not have off-street parking, making access to public charging a key factor in EV adoption.

Brighton & Hove is one of several local authorities working with char.gy to increase charging availability. In the London Borough of Barnet, the company installed 300 charge points in six weeks as part of a wider 500-unit rollout. Elsewhere, Reading Borough Council has partnered with the operator to install around 2,600 charge points, while more than 1,500 chargers are planned for the Isle of Wight.

char.gy's charging model focuses on kerbside installations, often using existing street infrastructure such as lamp columns to reduce disruption and installation costs.

The company's network is powered through a partnership with EDF, with electricity matched to renewable generation through Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates.

John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, said: "Reaching 5,000 charge points is a proud moment for char.gy, but what it really represents is thousands of households across the UK who can now seriously consider going electric.
