Met Police adopts new technology to manage EV charging
Met Police

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is using fleet management technology to support the operation of its growing electric vehicle fleet.

Using a charge management system from BetterFleet, MPS fleet teams have real-time oversight of vehicle charging activity across depots and public charging networks, helping ensure frontline vehicles remain operational while simplifying the management of an increasingly complex mixed fleet of electric, hybrid and conventional vehicles.

The MPS operates approximately 5,500 vehicles, with around 30% already electric or hybrid. The force plans to add a further 250 electric or hybrid vehicles and motorcycles over the next year, increasing the need for more sophisticated tools to manage charging infrastructure, vehicle availability and operational readiness.

BetterFleet’s software has been designed to streamline EV fleet operations by allowing managers to oversee all charging locations through a single platform. The system provides live visibility of which vehicles are charging, fully charged or require attention, while also enabling automatic prioritisation of critical frontline vehicles to ensure emergency response capability is maintained at all times.

The technology also automates a range of administrative processes, including authentication across charging networks and allocation of energy and charging costs to the correct departments and cost centres. Fleet managers can additionally monitor charging performance in real time and use automated alerts and diagnostics to identify and resolve issues quickly before they affect vehicle deployment.

The system will also support shared charging infrastructure with other London-based fleets, helping improve utilisation of charging assets and reduce operational complexity as public sector organisations expand their electric vehicle operations.

AI and its transformative effect on fleet management will be discussed at the next GREENFLEET Net Zero Masterclass. Register for free here.
