Campaign launched to improve electrification of London's taxis

A new campaign, Cabbies for the Climate, has launched in Southwark.
It hopes to challenge outdated perceptions about London’s black-cab drivers and their stance on environmental issues.
Backed by the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA) and climate charity Possible, the initiative aims to accelerate the transition of London’s iconic taxi fleet to electric vehicles.
It also highlights that cabbies are, contrary to stereotypes, largely supportive of environmental policies.
Sam Pooke, senior policy manager at FREENOW UK, said: “FREENOW welcomes the Cabbies for the Climate campaign to accelerate the transition of London’s iconic taxi fleet to electric vehicles, including reinstating and expanding financial support for taxi drivers. We know the limited EV taxi offer and the cost of buying and running an EV vehicle is prohibitive for many drivers. A recent survey revealed that nine in 10 black cab drivers said that making EV taxis more affordable is important in supporting them in making the transition, with 72 per cent stating that the cost of vehicles impacted them financially.
"At FREENOW, over 70 per cent of trips are done with EV black cabs, and we continue to support drivers with the costs of running their EVs through our partnerships with OVO and bp Pulse where they can access unique discounts. However, if the government is serious about its sustainability targets, it needs to do more to support taxi drivers and ensure they are at the forefront and can contribute to the decarbonisation of our cities.”
