Phase out new diesel HGVs by 2040, says NIC

The National Infrastructure Commission believes that the government should make a commitment to phase out diesel HGVs by 2040.

In its Annual Monitoring Report, which looks at what needs to happen to ensure government can meet its net zero target, the NIC proposes the government publish a comprehensive cross-modal freight strategy with a firm commitment to phase out diesel HGVs by 2040, along with detailed decarbonisation plans consulted on with the road haulage and logistics industry. It also calls for accelerating the roll out of electric vehicle charge points.

The report also calls for the government to develop clear and funded plans to deliver on energy commitments, including setting out next steps on the development of a hydrogen industry.
