IONITY expands EV charging in Scottish Highlands

Two new IONITY electric vehicle charging sites have opened in the Scottish Highlands, one located near Fort William and the other at Inshes in Inverness, next to Inshes Primary School.

The two new sites support sustainable travel for both tourists and locals while strengthening long-distance electric journeys across the UK and daily commutes alike.

The Fort William site marks IONITY’s twelfth charging location in Scotland, with the eleventh site located in Inverness opening only two weeks prior. Together, these announcements highlight IONITY’s continued investment in expanding high-powered EV infrastructure across key regions of the country. It also aligns with the Scottish Government's stated intentions to develop high-powered EV infrastructure across key locations in the country.

The new sites are ideally positioned to support drivers travelling through the Highlands, offering reliable, high-powered charging of up to 400 kW close to major tourist routes and natural landmarks. The Fort William site’s proximity to Ben Nevis enables visitors to explore the region with confidence in electric vehicles. The Inverness site, often referred to as the capital of the Highlands, supports local commuters while helping raise awareness among young students of the infrastructure powering the future of sustainable travel in the Highlands.

Meg Snedden, Head Teacher at Inshes Primary School commented: "Having such an important renewable energy project right beside our school has created a valuable real-world learning opportunity for our pupils. Making sustainable travel a reality within their local community is so important in normalising the technology for younger generations.

"The children appreciated the opportunity to speak with the IONITY team and learn more about the new charging hub. They have been learning about renewable energy and exploring sustainability in class, so being able to see how electric vehicle charging works in practice has helped bring that learning to life."

"The opening of our eleventh and twelfth sites in Scotland marks an important milestone in expanding high-powered charging across the Highlands,’ agrees Andreas Atkins, Country Manager for UK and Ireland at IONITY. ‘By strengthening our network in key locations such as Fort William and Inverness, we are helping make electric travel across the UK more convenient and reliable for both residents and visitors."
