Bio-CNG use among UK truck fleets is continuing to grow as operators seek lower-carbon alternatives to diesel, according to new figures from ReFuels.

The company, which owns 40% of CNG Fuels, reported that Bio-CNG volumes dispensed across the network increased by 8% year-on-year during the first quarter of its 2027 financial year.

The number of vehicles using the network also rose 11% to more than 2,250, while ReFuels expects more than 900 additional CNG trucks to take to UK roads over the next 12 to 18 months.

Philip Fjeld, CEO and co-founder of ReFuels, said: 

“Bio-CNG offers greater energy resilience, lower fuel costs and emissions than diesel and HVO.”

The company believes adoption will continue to accelerate, with its largest customers providing visibility towards 8,000 CNG-powered HGVs operating in the UK by the end of 2030.

Fjeld said:  “We expect more than 900 new CNG trucks on the roads over the next 12–18 months, and our largest customers provide visibility to 8,000 CNG HGVs by end-2030.”

ReFuels is also expanding the CNG Fuels refuelling network to accommodate increased demand.

Magor is expected to open in October as the network's 17th station, while additional high-capacity facilities are under construction at Swindon and Carlisle. The new sites are expected to take total network refuelling capacity to more than 14,000 HGVs per day.

Fjeld added: “We are expanding our refuelling network to meet this growth and have a record three new high-capacity stations simultaneously under construction."
