Government calls for views on ICE vehicle phase out

News

A government consultation is seeking views on delivering the commitment to end the sale of new cars powered exclusively by internal combustion engines by 2030, as in line with the UK’s transition to zero emissions vehicles. It is accepting responses until the 18th February 2025.

The first part of the consultation concerns phasing out new sales of petrol and diesel cars from 2030, and is conducted solely by the UK government. This section of the consultation seeks views on options to end the sale of new cars that aren’t hybrid or fully electric from 2023, potential legislation to ban non-zero emission vans from being sold from 2030 to 2035, a consideration of approach for small volume manufactures, and demand measures to support the uptake of zero emission vehicles.

The second part of the consultation about the ZEV Mandate, and is conducted by the UK government, Scottish government, Welsh government, and the Department for Infrastructure (Northern Ireland) and seeks ponies on the existing flexibilities within the ZEV mandate, the possibilities of further flexibilities, and other technical updates to the ZEV mandate to increase its efficiency. This evidence will help direct potential future amendments to the ZEV Mandate and further CO2 emissions regulation.
