Consultation on 2040 ICE truck phase-out launched
The government has launched a consultation on developing a regulatory framework to phase out sales of new non-zero emission HGVs.
It seeks views on the regulatory options to reduce emissions from new heavy goods vehicles, and support phasing out the sale of new non-zero emission heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) weighing up to and including 26 tonnes by 2035, and all new non-zero emission HGVs by 2040.
The government says that by consulting closely with industry, it will ensure the road to net zero is one that works for businesses and supports jobs, growth and increased investment.
Keir Mather MP, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and, Decarbonisation, said in the foreword: "This consultation marks the beginning of these discussions, to hear views on how a future regulation may be designed to ensure we develop a world-class standard achievable by industry and capable of delivering a clean energy future for Britian."
The consultation closes on 17 March 2026.
