Porsche to launch wireless charging system for electric cars

Porsche is set to introduce a wireless charging system for electric vehicles, becoming the first car manufacturer to bring an 11 kW inductive charging solution to market.
The system will debut with the upcoming all-electric Cayenne, which is scheduled for launch at the end of 2025.
The technology allows drivers to simply park over a floor-mounted charging plate, eliminating the need for cables, wallboxes, or separate control units.
Sales of the charging plate will begin in 2026 through Porsche Centres and the company’s online shop.
Porche says the new charging system matches the performance of wired AC charging, offering up to 90 per cent efficiency. It uses a copper coil embedded in a robust, weatherproof base plate to generate a magnetic field, which is converted into direct current by a receiver installed in the vehicle’s underbody. The Cayenne lowers itself slightly during the charging process to optimise energy transfer, which occurs over a gap of just a few centimetres. Safety features include motion detectors and foreign object recognition to prevent overheating or injury.
Charging begins automatically once the car is correctly positioned, with assistance provided by the vehicle’s Surround View system. The process can be monitored and managed via the My Porsche app, which also supports multiple vehicles.
The charging plate includes LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity for over-the-air updates and long-term infrastructure support. It has been certified for safety in both Europe and the United States, with successful durability tests conducted by TÜV Süd.
The Cayenne Electric will also support high-speed DC charging at up to 400 kW, ensuring fast top-ups on long trips. At the IAA Mobility show in Munich, Porsche presented a prototype of the Cayenne Electric with a unique fluorescent paint finish that lights up when charging.
Porsche plans to roll out wireless charging in Europe first, with other markets to follow.
