The Mazda 1.5 Skyactive-D diesel engine has enabled the company to reduce its Mazda3 model’s emissions to 99 g/km CO2.

The engine is also present in the Mazda2 and CX-3, which also boosts an impressive fuel economy of up to 74.3 MPG. If drivers comes close to the official combined fuel economy figure, the Mazda3 will have a range of more than 800 miles.

The five-door hatch and four-door fastback saloon also contain the new engine. However, while the hatchback can also be specified with Mazda’s six-speed automatic transmission, this brings CO2 emissions to 114 g/km, and it is only the manual that comes in below the crucial 100 g/m mark.

The unit releases 105 hp and 199 lb ft of torque, powering rear wheels. The manual gearbox allows a 0.62 mph time of 11 seconds and top speed of 116 mph.
