Fiat Chrysler contemplate European electric city car

Fiat Chrysler is considering adding full electric vehicles to its line-up, with the Maserati Alfieri sportscar and a small city car top of the list.

If Fiat produced an electric city car for the European market it would be the first electric model sold in the region. Currently, the manufacturers only sells an electric version of its iconic 500 subcompact in its North American market, but with Californian emission rules, the company believes it is losing money one each model sold.

Sergio Marchionne, chief executive officer, told Bloomberg Television: “I’ve always thought the economic model that supports Tesla is something that Fiat Chrysler could replicate as we have the brand and the vehicles to do it. I think that to use one of our potential cars as an experiment in this area is interesting.”

Marchionne also revealed that the popular manufacturer will introduce more hybrid vehicles, including the Maserati Levante sport-utility vehicles, to its range.
