New DVLA tax rates to be enforced in a couple of months

News

The new vehicle tax rates are soon to be coming into force, with 44 days left to go.

On 1 April, 2017, anybody who buys a car registered from this date will have to pay a set rate on tax, which will be based on CO2 emissions for the first year.

After this, the amount you pay will depend on the type of vehicle.

Vehicles that are registered before this date will be exempt from these changes.

The new rates see diesel and petrol cars taxed £140 per year, alternative fuel vehicles such as hybrids, bioethanol and LPG at £130 per year, and vehicles with zero CO2 emissions will not have to pay anything.

In addition to this, vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000 will be charged an additional rate of £310 for five years, as well as the standard rate applicable to the vehicle type.

After those years are up, the vehicle would then be taxed at one of the standard rates.

Rohan Gye, DVLA Vehicle Service Manager, said: “These changes won’t affect any vehicles that are registered before 1 April 2017. So, for anyone who already owns a car or is thinking of buying a used car, the rates of vehicle tax will not be changing.

“However, anyone considering buying a new car that will be first registered from 1 April should check the vehicle tax rates table on GOV.UK to find out how much they’ll pay.”
