Guernsey to subsidise electric bikes to improve air quality

News

A discount of 25 per cent will be offered on electric bikes up to the value of £1,500.

The States of Guernsey will pay 20 per cent, while bike retailers will makeup the remaining five per cent.

Anyone over the age of 14 can take part in the initiative which launches later this month.

People taking part in the scheme will be asked to take part in surveys over a twelve month period.

That feedback will then be used by Guernsey's Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure (E&I) to help gather data on electric bike usage on the island and how it helps improve air quality.

E&I president Barry Brehaut said: "This initiative will help further establish e-cycles as a viable alternative to the motor vehicle for a wide section of the community, including those members of the public less able to cycle longer distances or up hills without some form of powered assistance. E-cycles are ideally suited to Guernsey given the island’s geometry, size and road network."
