A £22.45 million investment by the Welsh government will see more than 140 new ambulances and vehicles added to the fleet, as part of the first phase of a five-year Welsh Ambulance Services fleet strategy.

The strategy, running until 2030, will prioritise electric and hybrid vehicles, where viable, to reduce carbon emissions, and includes all vehicles operated by the Welsh Ambulance Service, even the Non-emergency Patient Transport Service.

Research conducted by Emergency Services Times, in partnership with Cenex, has revealed that only 13% of the existing emergency service fleet is electric or hybrid.

The Freedom of Information request went to 108 emergency services and had a 95 per cent response rate.

The research asked how many electric or hybrid vehicles the emergency services planned to buy each year and how much they will spend up to 2030. In nearly 70% of the responses, services said they didn’t know what they planned to spend, wouldn’t say, or said it was wrapped up in wider plans not yet confirmed.

A new project has been launched to address the challenges that emergency service operations face when using zero-emission (ZE) technology.

Funded by Innovate UK under the Net Zero Mobility programme, Project RESPONSE (Robust Emergency Services Performing Operations in Electric) seeks to address the obstacles that have hindered zero emission emergency service operations planning and dispatch systems.

The project will be led by Flexible Power Systems (FPS) with support from Cenex.

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has taken delivery of nine Nissan electric Townstar vans, with another five expected to arrive shortly.

The vehicles are being used by the trust’s security and estates teams, as well as carrying out important tasks such as transporting blood samples and delivering furniture and other bulky items to hospitals and surgeries in and around North Yorkshire.

The Townstars are successors to a number of e-NV200s, the vehicle’s predecessor.

Amey is partnering with NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) to decarbonise the NHS’s transport infrastructure. This will involve investment in sustainable transport including active travel, micro-mobility and electric vehicles.

Central to Amey’s offer will be data-led asset management, including implementing new technology to reduce carbon and improve air quality. Amey will also use its mobile network data capability to drive decision making and change travel patterns across the network.

Zero emission battery electric fire tenders - in combination with hydrogen fuel cells and a minimum of 8kg of onboard hydrogen fuel storage - will meet current requirements for flexibility, emergency response and the water pumping requirements. This will be invaluable particularly in rural and semi-urban services, and for specialist HGVs with power take-offs, where batteries alone will not provide the overall energy needs of the application.

Ford is showcasing its Mach-E police concept at the Emergency Services Show, at the NEC, Birmingham on 7-8 September.

The test car was built following many enquiries from UK police forces looking for greener solutions to the current products currently available to them.

The Metropolitan Police Force has already appraised the standard Mustang Mach-E and has now requested a full evaluation of the marked concept. Also waiting for an opportunity to try the new 999 vehicle are the Sussex, Surrey, South Wales, Dyfed Powys, Devon & Cornwall and Police Scotland forces.
