The sales of used battery electric vehicles grew faster than any other powertrain in the third quarter of the year – up 44.4% to 80,614 units, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This marks a record market share of 4.0% for battery electric vehicles.

New data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that used car transactions reached almost two million units (1,996,116) in the second quarter, bringing the overall market back to pre-pandemic level in the first half of the year.

The UK’s used car market grew by 1.7 per cent this quarter, with a record 68,721 electric vehicles changing hands. This means that one in ten used car sales are electrified. The combined market share of petrol and diesel ICE cars fell by more than two percentage points as second-hand electric vehicles grew in popularity.

A letter has been sent to the government to emphasise the need for swift action to support the used battery electric vehicle (BEV) market, which has been coordinated by the BVRLA and signed by companies representing the UK’s automotive sector.

The open letter, delivered to the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander MP, highlighting how the Government can best direct the £1.4bn committed last month to ‘support continued uptake of electric vehicles, including vans and HGVs’.

Sales of used-battery electric cars have increased by by 58.5% to 65,850 units in the first quarter of 2025 - reaching a record 3.3% share of all transactions, according to SMMT figures.

Overall, 2,020,990 second hand vehicles of all fuel types changed hands in Q1 – growing by 2.7% on the same period last year.

Demand for used battery electric cars (BEVs) rose 57.4% to a record 188,382 units in 2024, according to the latest SMMT figures. They achieved a market share of 2.5%, up from 1.7% in 2023 and 13 times larger than back in 2019.

Sales of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and hybrids (HEVs) also grew, up 32.2% to 92,120 units and 39.3% to 306,114 units respectively.

Combined, the number of used electrified vehicles sold increased by 43.3% on 2023, with more than half a million of these ultra low or zero emission motors accounting for a 7.7% share of sales.

According to the latest AA Used Car Index, prices of the UK’s most popular used electric and hybrid vehicles rose in the final three months of 2024, in a sign that the recent market volatility is easing.

The average cost of the top 20 most searched for EVs and hybrids on AA Cars rose up 1% to £19,143 in the three months to December, compared with a 16% annual drop in the third quarter of 2024.

The BVRLA has warned that the country's decarbonisation targets are at risk unless it acts now to strengthen demand for used electric vehicles.

Used EV-targeted grants, tax incentives and a confidence-building communication campaign would boost demand and stabilise prices, which are slumping, the BVRLA warns.

The urgent need for intervention has been highlighted by new forecasting from Oxford Economics, which shows that used electric vehicle (EV) prices will carry on falling over the rest of this decade.

Sales of used electric vehicles in the first quarter of the year have risen by more than two thirds (71.0%) to 41,505 – achieving a new record market share of 2.1%, according to the SMMT. This makes BEVs the fastest growing powertrain.

Hybrids (HEVs) also continued to sell in greater volumes, with 74,502 changing hands in a 49.3% rise. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), too, grew in popularity, with sales up 42.5% to 22,065.
