Company car emissions fall by -11.5% in 2023

The SMMT has released new Motorparc data which has shown that average car CO2 dropped -2.1% in 2023 – while company car emissions plummeted by -11.5%. This is despite a record number of motors on the road.

The SMMT says the reduction in company car emissions is thanks to compelling fiscal incentives encouraging fleets to invest in EVs and that the government should provide similar incentives to private consumers to help dramatically decarbonise UK road transport.

The SMMT has reported that while battery electric vehicle (BEV) registration volumes were at their highest ever recorded levels in March, market share fell by one percentage point from the same month last year, down to 15.2%. Registrations rose 3.8%, with only fleets showing any volume growth.

Overall, new car registrations rose 10.4% in best March since 2019 and 20th consecutive month of growth.

Petrol cars retained the lion’s share of the market, at 55.7%, with registrations up 9.2% year on year, as diesel volumes fell -2.7% to account for just 7.3% of demand.

Britain has achieved its millionth EV registered milestone in January 2024, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has reported.

Some 20,935 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered in January, a rise of 21.0% year on year, taking the overall total since 2002 to 1,001,677. BEV market share for January also grew year on year to 14.7%, although this is below the full 2023 performance of 16.5%. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) recorded volume growth of 31.1% to take 8.4% of the market, while hybrid (HEV) volumes fell -1.2% with a 13.1% share.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) uptake reached a record volume in 2023 – up by almost 50,000 units with 314,687 new registrations, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This means more BEVs reached the road than in 2020 and 2021 combined.

Overall, BEVs accounted for one in six new cars registered in 2023, with the majority taken by business and fleet buyers who benefit from tax incentives.

Fleets are continuing to lead the transition to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Of the 24,359 new BEVs reaching the road in November, 77.4% were taken on by fleets and businesses, according to the SMMT.

While overall BEV volumes fell by -17.1% in November, leading to a reduced market share of 15.6%, last November was atypical with significant deliveries following supply chain disruptions.

Year to date, BEV uptake is up 27.5% with a 16.3% market share – expected to rise to 22.3% next year.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) uptake increased for the 42nd month in a row, by 20.1% to 23,943 units in October, according to SMMT figures.

This amounted to a BEV market share of 15.6%, a relatively small rise from last year’s 14.8%. Furthermore, private registrations accounted for fewer than one in four new BEVs this year, which the SMMT says underscores the need for fiscal incentives for private consumers. Year to date, BEV volumes have risen 34.2% to account for 16.3% of new registrations this year, up slightly from 14.6% this time last year.

The UK new car market has continued its growth trajectory, as registrations grew 16.7% in May to reach 145,204 units according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Large fleet registrations continued to drive the growth, up by 36.9% to 76,207 units, reflecting a regularisation of supply following challenging supply issues in 2022. Registrations to private buyers fell slightly by -0.5% to 65,932 cars, while smaller business fleets registered 3,065 units, a year on year rise of 22.5%.

According to the SMMT, new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) remained the second most popular fuel type in April, coming behind petrol, with deliveries up by more than half to 20,522 and 15.4% of the market. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) also posted strong growth, up 33.3% with 8,595 registered in the month, while hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) recorded a 7.7% increase to 15,026 units.

As a result, electrified vehicles accounted for more than one in three registrations in April. Petrol-powered cars retained their best-selling status, comprising 58.1% of all registrations.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries in March reached a record monthly high of 46,626, representing growth of 18.6%, according to figures from the SMMT.

Overall, the BEV market share remained almost the same as last year at 16.2% and, with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) registrations growing by 11.8%, plug-in registrations comprised 22.4% of the market – a slight decline on 2022. The biggest growth, however, was in hybrids (HEVs), with a 34.3% surge helping electrified vehicles account for more than one in three registrations for the month.

According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) recorded the most significant growth of all fuel types in February, up 40.0%. This was followed by petrol, up 35.8% with a 56.9% market share, while diesel registrations fell by -7.0%.

Zero emission capable vehicles, meanwhile, continued their upward trend, with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rising 1.0% and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) posting another strong month, up 18.2% to account for one in six new UK car registrations.
