Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations rose by 14.9% to reach a market share of 26.5% – the highest this year, according to SMMT data.

The SMMT says that an increase in model choice, ongoing manufacturer discounts and some initial impact from the newly announced Electric Car Grant has helped the growth.

BEV growth was only outpaced by plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) uptake, which rose by 69.4% to deliver an 11.8% market share. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) uptake, meanwhile, fell by -13.9% to account for 11.4% of the market.

July saw the eighth successive month of decline in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market, which fell -5.1 per cent to 23,433 new LCV registrations.

Demand fell across most categories this month, such as pickups and small vans, with last month being the weakest July since 2022.

In July 2025, the new cars market declined by -5.0 per cent to 140,154 vehicles, according to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This makes July 2025 the weakest performance for the month since 2022, and follows two months of growth.

Battery electric vehicles (BEV) increased 8.1% to 24,558 units in April, the latest SMMT data shows.

Despite taking a market share of 20.4%, the SMMT warns that this is still significantly below Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate requirement.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) registrations rose 34.1% in April, while petrol and diesel registrations were down –22.0% and –26.2% respectively.

New data by the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders (SMMT) has revealed that although the UK car market fell by -2.5 per cent to 139,345 units in January, electric vehicles (EVs) took more than a fifth of new car registrations overall. Whereas new car registrations for petrol and diesel cars fell (by -15.3 per cent and -7.7 per cent respectively), all types of electric vehicle rose.

There was a record number of battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in 2024, which made up 19.6% of the market (381,970 units), up by more than a fifth (67,283 units) from last year, but short of the 22% demanded by the ZEV mandate, the SMMT has reported.

There is now a record 132 ZEV models available to the UK market, up 38% since 2023 to account for a third of all models available.

The SMMT says that one of the major constraints to growth, however, has been lacklustre demand by private buyers, with only one in 10 choosing an EV in 2024.

The UK new car market fell for the second time this year, down by -6.0% in October to 144,288 new registrations, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Fleet sales fell for the second time this year, down -1.7%, and the low-volume business market declining -12.8%. Private purchases continued their two-year long wane, down -11.8% meaning fewer than four in 10 (38.8%) of new cars registered in the first 10 months have gone directly to private buyers.

Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEV) has hit a new record volume for any month in September, according to SMMT figures.

Sales of BEVs rose 24.4% to 56,387 units, achieving a 20.5% share of the overall market, up from 16.6% a year ago.

Fleets drove much of this growth, with deliveries rising 36.8% to account for more than three quarters (75.9%) of BEV registrations.

Sales of new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) rose 10.8% in August, according to the latest SMMT figures.

The BEV market share in August reached 22.6%, the highest for a month since December 2022, when BEVs accounted for 32.9% of all new cars sold.

Year to date, BEV market share has edged up to 17.2% and is expected to rise further to 18.5% by the end of the year thanks to increasing model choice – with some 364,000 BEVs registrations forecast for the year. Despite this growth, this will still be shy of the 22% required by the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate.

According to the latest figures from the SMMT, electrified vehicle (hybrid, PHEV and BEV) demand outpaced the overall market in July, accounting for four in 10 (42.0%) new cars registered in the month.

Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) uptake increased by 31.4% to achieve a 14.5% market share, while plug-in hybrids (PHEV) grew 12.4% to take 8.9% of registrations.
