Largest EV charging hub in the South West opens

Osprey Charging has opened the largest ultra-rapid EV charging hub in the South West, located at Salmon’s Leap, Buckfastleigh on the A38 Devon Expressway.

The site is open and expected to cater for the high volumes of seasonal traffic expected in Devon this summer. It will also critically provide local residents, businesses and visitors with reliable EV infrastructure.

The Government looks unlikely to meet its target of having six or more rapid or ultra-rapid electric vehicle chargers at every motorway service area in England by the end of 2023, new research by the RAC reveals.

Less than a quarter (23% – 27) of 119 motorway services reviewed by the RAC on Zapmap currently have the target number of chargers.

Osprey Charging, one of the UK’s largest and leading electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, has opened its latest ultra-rapid charging hub at The Halfway House on the A127 in Essex, just off the M25.

The charging hub features six high-powered EV chargers next to the UK’s busiest motorway, offering a reliable, accessible and easy-to-use charging experience for all EV drivers. Osprey’s hub will also support local decarbonisation efforts, with the aim of improving air quality and reducing noise pollution.

TfL commences project to unlock public land for EV charging

Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Zest a contract to provide and operate 39 rapid or ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging bays on public land, such as those owned by local authorities and the NHS.

The charging points will be in installed 24 locations in south and southwest London by the end of 2024 including outer London boroughs such as Sutton and Bromley.

The charging infrastructure will be placed in parking bays near key routes used for essential road journeys typically made by high mileage, commercial users - including taxis and freight.

Shell Germany and the Volkswagen Group have opened their first 150 kW Elli Flexpole charging station at a Shell service station in Göttingen.

The charging station of the Volkswagen brand Elli has a battery storage system that enables connection to a low-voltage grid. Thanks to this new technology, the charging stations can be installed easily and flexibly, and the grid expansion can be accelerated. Following a successful test operation, Shell and Volkswagen also plan to install the Flexpole charging station at other locations in Germany and Europe.

Osprey Charging has increased access to public charging, with high powered chargers installed in Hull and in Bridgend.

In Hull, three high-powered EV chargers installed at the Willerby Business Park.

In Bridgend, chargers have been installed at two pubs - the Cherry Laurel (2 chargers) and Llangewydd Arms (3 chargers).

The 75kW rapid charge points are compatible with every EV on the market today and can typically add 100 miles of range in just 35 minutes, depending on the model of the vehicle and its battery.

ChargeUK launches to be voice of EV charging industry

A new trade association, called ChargeUK, has been launched to be the voice of the EV charging industry, bringing together 18 of the largest EV charging companies.

Between them the members of ChargeUK have announced they will invest over £6 billion installing and operating new EV charging infrastructure by 2030. They will install tens of thousands of new chargers this year, with the aim of doubling the size of the network through 2023.
