UK car production grows 21 per cent in January

January was a positive month for UK car production, with volumes rising 21.0% to 82,997 units, according to the latest figures by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This marks the best January performance since 2021 and the fifth straight month of growth.

Ford has opened a £24 million facility in its headquarters in Dunton, Essex, to help deliver the manufacturer's electric vehicle plans.

The Propulsion Development Laboratory was inaugurated by UK transport minister Anthony Browne MP as part of a site-wide tour on Wednesday (14 February).

The minister saw EV powertrain components tested with speeds and loads to accelerate levels of wear which customers would incur after years of vehicle use.

The zero emission vehicle mandate (ZEV), the government’s route to all new cars and vans being zero emission by 2035, is now law.

The zero emission vehicle mandate sets out the percentage of new zero emission cars and vans manufacturers will be required to produce each year up to 2030. Eighty per cent of new cars and 70 per cent of new vans sold in Great Britain will now need to be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035.

Production of EVs, hybrids and PHEVs rises over 50% in October

According to SMMT data, UK production of battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) vehicles rose in October. Combined output grew 52.1 per cent to represent four-in-10 (40.1 per cent) of all cars made in the month, a near record high. Since January, UK factories have turned out 287,408 of these models, up 59.1 per cent on the year before and helping push overall car production up 16.7 per cent to 751,422 units.

Overall, UK car production has risen 31.6 per cent in October. This makes the eighth month of growth this year, with 91,512 units produced.

Nissan has confirmed that it will be manufacturing all-electric versions of the Qashqai and JUKE at its Sunderland factory, along with the next-generation Nissan LEAF, which is already produced there. This is alongside am additional gigafactory.

This totals an investment up to £2bn from Nissan.

Both vehicle and battery manufacturing will be powered by the EV36Zero Microgrid, which will incorporate the wind and solar farms at Nissan and will have the capability to deliver 100% renewable electricity to Nissan and its neighbouring suppliers.

The government has confirmed the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which will set out the percentage of new zero emission cars manufacturers will be required to produce each year up to 2035, will be going ahead from next year.

The decision to continue with the ZEV mandate comes despite the government delaying the ban on the sale new petrol and diesel cars and vans fby five years to 2035.

The zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035.

UK car manufacturing falls 9.7 per cent in August

UK car production fell -9.7% in August, following six consecutive months of growth, with 45,052 models produced, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The SMMT says that August is typically the smallest volume month of the year with often variable summer shutdowns which can lead to large percentage variations, and this August’s output was in part affected by extended production pauses at some plants for planned maintenance and upgrades as car makers gear up to produce the next generation of electric vehicles.

BMW Group has announced that its MINI plant in Oxford will become an all electric production site by 2030, following an investment from the Group of more than £600 million in the MINI factories at Oxford and Swindon.

“With this new investment we will develop the Oxford plant for production of the new generation of electric MINIs and set the path for purely electric car manufacturing in the future,” says Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for production.

New software could enable EVs to have smaller batteries

WAE Elysia is showcasing its Battery Intelligence software at IAA Mobility in Munich, which it says can reduce battery mass of up to 19%, without impacting range. This means electric vehicles could have smaller batteries with the same range through software alone.

Elysia’s suite of Battery Intelligence technologies use algorithms that can safely unlock extra performance from an electric vehicle battery, bringing a host of benefits for plug-in car makers, which in turn can be passed on to consumers.
