Inquiry into transport manufacturing workforce launched

A new inquiry into how the Government can support transport manufacturing in the UK by planning and investing in the skills of its workers, has been launched by the Transport Committee.

The inquiry will examine the the manufacturing sectors for motor vehicles, buses, ships, aeroplanes and trains, and the skills that these sectors need for physical construction as well as for roles associated with research, technology and design, fitting out and the wider supply chain.

"Electrified" car production rises in first half of 2025

While overall UK vehicle production fell in first half of 2025, "electrified" car production rose by 1.8% to 160,107 units – delivering a record share of output for the first half of the year, according to the SMMT. This means that hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles accounted for more than two in five (41.5%) units produced in the UK so far in 2025.

A new gigafactory in Sunderland has received a £1 billion boost in a move to spearhead the UK's vehicle electrification goals.

The new AESC gigafactory will manufacture batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), and will power up to 100,000 EVs each year, six times as much as the country's current capacity.

The car manufacturing company Nissan and the Japan Automatic Transmission Company (JATCO) have secured a £50 million investment package in partnership with the government to create a new manufacturing plan in Sunderland.

Not only will this plant be JATCO’s first and only European plant to produce 3-in-1 electric vehicle powertrains, the new site will also help create 183 new jobs in the region, supporting over 40 in the wider supply chain.

UK car production fell -30.1% in November, the ninth consecutive month of decline, according to the latest figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

64,216 cars were produced, 27,711 fewer than in November last year, which the SMMT says is due to a combination of factors, including strategic product decisions, weakness in key global markets, calendarisation and the fact that production grew significantly in November 2023 as Covid-related supply chain challenges faded.

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that British car production has fallen, being down -15.3 per cent in October, producing 77,484 units, which is 14,037 fewer than what left factories the same month in 2023.

This is the eighth consecutive month in decline as plants continue their retooling to allow production of the next generation of zero emission vehicles.

In the year to date, UK commercial vehicle output has risen 5.8% on 2023 with 78,805 units produced, making the year to date the best performance in 14 years, according to SMMT data.

Volumes are also up a massive 72.3% on 2019 levels – driven by exports, up 12.0%, with 52,389 units shipped overseas. Output for the domestic market, however, fell -4.7% to 26,416 units.

This is despite August commercial vehicle manufacturing falling -10.0% in August, with 6,044 units rolled out of UK factories.

UK car production fell by -8.4% in August, which is a conventionall low output month due to summer shutdowns, according to the SMMT.

The decline was equivalent to just 3,781 fewer units as 41,271 new cars rolled off production lines, and continues the trend seen across the year, as factories wind down production of key models in preparation for new – primarily electric – model production.
