The West Midlands Gigafactory joint venture has confirmed that it is in advanced discussions with several Asian battery manufacturers about future investment at the Coventry site.

The West Midlands Gigafactory’s Coventry location has planning permission in place for a large-scale battery production facility with capacity for up to 60GWh per annum – enough to power 600,000 electric vehicles.

Tata Group, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, has chosen the UK for its first gigafactory outside India, which will secure UK-produced batteries for the Jaguar Land Rover, as well as other manufacturers in the UK and Europe.

Production at the new gigafactory is due to start in 2026 with an investment of over £4 billion. It will supply JLR’s future battery electric models including the Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar brands, with the potential to also supply other car manufacturers. British electric vehicle manufacturer Tevva has entered into a partnership with Ecobat for the repair, repurposing and recycling of its lithium-ion batteries. The partnership kicks off with a 12-month pilot phase for first-life battery management, with the opportunity to expand into additional energy storage and recycling solutions.

In the unlikely case that an issue arises during vehicle life, Ecobat will ensure Tevva’s in-house assembled lithium-ion batteries are handled, diagnosed and repaired using the most effective and environmentally friendly methods.
