EV transition drives apprenticeship recruitment

Apprenticeship numbers in the automotive sector have risen by almost a sixth in 2025, according to a new survey by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

With the UK celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2025 (10-16 February), data shows that more than 550 new apprentices have already joined the sector this academic year, with an additional 740 apprenticeships still available.

A national network of training venues has been set up by the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) to meet rising demand from fleet managers.

The number of people who have taken courses this year at the body’s AFP Academy training arm has increased by 29% and Paul Hollick, chair, said more locations were needed to cope.

North Hertfordshire College has officially launched its ElectrAssure Training Academy in collaboration with EV charging specialist ElectrAssure.

The official launch event took place at the North Hertfordshire College’s Engineering and Construction Campus, a site that supports the development and upskilling of tradespeople and engineers to address industry skills requirements and gaps.

The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has unveiled its 2024 programme of training, as the organisation reports record levels of interest in its courses.

In total, the organisation plans to offer 550 days of training through its training arm, the AFP Fleet Academy, the highest number ever, including its predecessor body, the Institute for Car Fleet Management.

The Association of Fleet Professionals’ (AFP) has launched a new course designed to help fleet professionals make their voices heard in a corporate environment.

Called “Accelerate – Your Voice in Fleet,” it has been designed by the AFP’s Fleet Academy to help those working in the industry make their knowledge, ideas and experience heard, whether giving a speech at a major formal occasion or during a routine internal meeting.

The MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) has taken delivery of a Tevva electric truck to help students get to grips with the latest electric vehicle technology.

The 7.5 tonne Tevva battery electric truck is based at the MTI’s for students to see how the technology works in practice.

With a course series developed to deliver skills to the automotive sector as part of the electric revolution, the MTI enables students to gain an awareness and understanding of electric and hybrid vehicles, so that they can learn how to inspect, diagnose, and rectify systems and components.
