Plant for sustainable tyre recycling to be built

SUEZ has plans to build a tyre recycling plant using Pyrum’s patented pyrolysis technology which saves up to 72 per cent of CO2 emissions in the process when compared with current recycling methods.

Over the coming 12 months, the agreement with Pyrum Innovations will see SUEZ identify a location for the first plant and initiate the approval process with support from Pyrum. The planned plant will comprise three pyrolysis reactors with a recycling capacity of around 20,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres per year.

Bridgestone will be showcasing its electric vehicle tyre technologies during this year's EV Rally across the UK and Ireland, as the event's official Tyre Partner.

The five-day, 1,200 mile ‘e-Rally’ will feature 50 electric vehicles stopping off at the five capital cities between 3-7 July, as a live demonstration of the capabilities of electric vehicles and the supporting charging infrastructure.

Majority of motorists unaware of electric vehicle specific tyres

New research from Apollo Tyres has identified that 82% of motorists in the UK are unaware that it is possible to purchase tyres specifically developed for electric vehicles (EV).

Awareness of these products is even lower among non-EV drivers. 86% of petrol and diesel car owners said that they were not aware of EV-specific tyres, compared to 62% of battery electric vehicle and hybrid car owners.

Kwik Fit has announced that following a successful pilot, it is making more tyres available which support sustainable natural rubber production and help protect the rainforests of Indonesia.

Over the last four months, many customers at Kwik Fit have purchased a selection of Pirelli UK tyres which are helping fund PROJECT TREE, an innovative sustainability programme in Sumatra. Now the choice has been significantly widened with the addition of ranges from premium tyre manufacturers Hankook and Continental.

Tyre safety charity TyreSafe has warned that electric vehicle owners should pay attention when replacing tyres, as tyres for electric vehicles are specifically designed for use on EVs and can be significantly different to ‘normal’ tyres.

TyreSafe is warning EV owners that fitting the wrong type of tyre could result in loss of range, extra noise, accelerated wear and the risk of failing while being driven, which could result in a serious incident.

A new tyre performance label and innovative system will be introduced on 1 May 2021, to help motorists understand how well tyres perform, especially for fuel efficiency and grip in the wet.

This follows concerns that vehicle owners are not aware of the significant differences between the highest and lowest rated tyres displayed on the outgoing label. According to a survey of the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association and Lizeo Group, just one per cent of tyres in the market are ‘A’ rated for both efficiency and wet grip.

A government-funded research study suggests particles released from vehicle tyres could be a significant and largely unrecorded source of microplastics in the marine environment.

The study is one of the first worldwide to identify tyre particles as a major and additional source of microplastics. Scientists have previously discovered microplastics, originating from microbeads in cosmetics and the degradation of larger items such as carrier bags and plastic bottles, in marine environments globally - from the deep seas to the Arctic.
