Scotland confirms non-domestic rates relief for EV charge points

The Scottish Government has confirmed it is providing ten years of 100 per cent relief from non-domestic rates for EV charge points, to support its net zero targets.

Announced in the Scottish Budget, it follows calls from industry to address the unexpected incoming cost which threatened a £100 million annual bill for the charging sector.

In response to the news Vicky Read, chief executive of EV charging industry association ChargeUK, said: “Affordable EV charging is a key part of ensuring a fair transition to electric vehicles.

New data from the Motability Scheme’s latest EV Transition Tracker shows that when choosing between charging points of varying tariffs, speeds and proximity, charging tariff or price was responsible for 52% of drivers decisions.

Proximity to the charger was selected by 27% and charging speed selected by 20%. Cost was also the most important factor for disabled drivers on the Motability Scheme, being responsible for 48% of their choice.

UK EV charge point manufacturer VCHRGD has announced its chargers are now integrated with Octopus Energy’s Intelligent Octopus Go smart tariff, offering fleet operators access to low charging costs and making it easier for installers to offer VCHRGD EV chargers to more customers.

Octopus Energy’s Intelligent Octopus Go tariff will give VCHRGD customers access to charging rates as low as £0.07/kWh, making them amongst the most affordable EV chargers directly integrated with the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff.

Nissan has partnered with EV charging provider Pod to provide an offer that halves the upfront cost of Pod Drive, a three-year subscription that covers all the home charging needs of EV drivers.

Pod Drive typically involves a £99 upfront fee for the installation of a Pod Point Solo 3S charger, but this is reduced to just £49 for Nissan customers.

The majority of councils across Great Britain are now fully compliant with national public charging standards, according to research from Drax Electric Vehicles.

The findings, based on Freedom of Information (FOI) responses from councils across Great Britain, reveal strong progress in the rollout and modernisation of local authority charge points. Of the 205 councils contacted, 178 responded, with 154 confirming they currently operate active public chargers.

British Gas and Zaptec have announced a pilot of the UK’s first communal EV charging tariff, designed to make electric vehicle charging less costly for property developers, landlords and residents in flats and other shared living spaces.

Communal charging has to date, remained more expensive than individual home charging, subject to business energy rates. This tariff is the first of its kind to address long-standing concerns about the wide disparity between public and private charging rates.
