Charging provider Pod Point and British Gas have launched a six-month EV charging trial which will see participants optimise EV charging to reduce energy costs and minimise carbon emissions.

The trial, which went live at the end of February 2024, recruited over 2,000 joint British Gas and Pod Point customers.

Research from the RAC Foundation suggests that around two-thirds of Britain’s most common type of public chargepoint suffer limited mobile signal connectivity, which can be a major problem if the charger requires an app to function.

According to Department for Transport figures (based on data from ZapMap) there are 31,910 public chargers with speeds up to 8kw and almost all will be Type-2 chargers.

East of England Co-op will see the installation of new charging stations to support critical public charging infrastructure.

They are collaborating with Osprey Charging Network to provide new EV rapid charging facilities.

The first EV charging location is open in Essex, at East of England Co-op Burnham-on-Crouch.

Steven Fendley, building and environmental compliance manager, said: "We are thrilled to partner with Osprey to provide more electric vehicle charging stations at our stores.

Paua has launched a new product called Reimburse, which allows drivers to receive equitable payment for charging, following am 18 month trial with Royal Mail.

The trial was to design and pilot a digitally integrated solution for fair compensation of electric vehicle drivers, a challenge that many employers across industry face today.

Paua Reimburse is designed to bridge the compensation gap for EV drivers, ensuring that they are fairly reimbursed for their charging efforts on business trips everywhere they charge.

Public sector charging facilities could be opened up for all fleets to use, the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has suggested, as way to of supporting other organisations with the move to electric vehicles.

Chair Paul Hollick said that some central and local government fleets were investing heavily in infrastructure to support their electric vehicles (EVs), and these could be made available in areas where private companies were having difficulty finding chargers.

The fleet and electric vehicle sector has expressed disappointment that calls to lower the VAT on public EV charging has not been addressed in the Spring Budget, delivered yesterday (6 March) by the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

Drivers who cannot charge at home pay four times more tax for electricity when using public charge points. VAT on domestic electricity is 5% whereas motorists using on-street chargers pay 20%.
