State of roads a major concern for drivers

A survey for the RAC has revealed that drivers' despair at the state of local roads has reached the highest level ever.

Fifty six per cent of drivers surveyed for the RAC Report on Motoring say the condition and maintenance of roads for which councils are responsible was one of their top motoring concerns, up seven percentage points compared to 2023 (49 per cent).

The state of local roads is now 21 percentage points ahead of the second biggest concern which is the cost of insuring a vehicle and 24 percentage points higher than the third biggest issue, the cost of fuel.

Fleet technology company Lightfoot has urged all three main political parties to do more for road safety and electrification, highlighting that their manifestos omit road safety - and measures to accelerate the electric transition are not enough.

The number of killed and seriously injured drivers and other road users is not markedly coming down in the UK. In fact, improvements in road safety seem to have stalled when it comes to the most serious incidents, and this affects at-work drivers, their families and their businesses hugely, believes Lightfoot.

The government has announced that all plans for new smart motorways have been cancelled due to lack of public confidence felt by drivers and cost pressures.

This will mean that the 11 schemes already paused from the second Road Investment Strategy (2020 to 2025) and the 3 earmarked for construction during the third Road Investment Strategy (2025 to 2030) will be removed from the government’s road-building plans.

Trakm8 and road safety charity Brake have revealed Britain’s Road Safety Hero for 2022 - an individual that have gone above and beyond to keep Britain’s roads safe.

The winner was announced as driver Sherry Cox, a smart meter technician from energy supply and solutions provider E.ON. Sherry was nominated by her manager Lance Goodenough for her efforts and commitment to promote road safety not just within her immediate team but across E.ON’s wider workforce too. Sherry will receive a £250 Amazon voucher as the Road Safety Hero Award winner.

The Scottish Occupational Road Safety Alliance (ScORSA) has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the risks of work-related driving and help businesses cut accidents among their workers.

The new campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers of work related driving, especially the ‘fatal four’: distraction, drink or drug misuse, speeding, and not wearing a seatbelt.

The government has launched the country's first ever Road Safety Investigation Branch (RSIB), which will investigate incidents on country’s roads and provide insight into what needs to change to help save lives.

Almost two thirds (59 per cent) of UK motorists believe that there will be more conflict on the nation's roads as a result of the introduction of the new hierarchy of road users, according to road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart.

The new risk-based hierarchy is the biggest change to the new Highway Code launched at the end of January, and states that road users who possess the potential to do the greatest harm will have the most responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others.

In the wake of widespread changes to the Highway Code earlier this year, millions of drivers are running the risk of breaking the rules of the road and endangering the safety of other road users and pedestrians.

Research commissioned by the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, has revealed that one in five (20 per cent) of the 1,000 motorists surveyed were unaware of the latest changes to the code, which came into force on 29 January 2022. This potentially represents over seven million out of the 35.9 million drivers in the UK.
