Shadow Roads Minister Bill Esterson has told members of electric vehicle (EV) trade group RECHARGE UK that Labour would restore the 2030 date for the end of the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.

At a meeting with the trade group on 7 February 2024, Bill Esterson said the reintroduction of the 2030 deadline, which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delayed to 2035, would give confidence to investors and help encourage consumers to make the switch to electric.

According to official statistics, the UK is the first major economy to halve its emissions.

The statistics show that the UK has cut emissions by 50 per cent between 1990 and 2022. This compares to a 23% reduction in France and no change in the USA between 1990 and 2021.

According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the reductions are largely due to cutting emissions from energy generation, through the shift away from using coal to using renewables.

A new Council for Net Zero Transport has been established to help steer the UK transport’s decarbonisation transition as it moves into the crucial delivery phase.

The Council will be convened by Zemo Partnership and chaired by Lord Deben, formerly UK Environment Secretary and Chair of the Climate Change Committee.

It will engage senior figures from government, industry, environment and academic sectors to help focus the Partnership as it works to forge a clear, strategic direction for road transport decarbonisation.

COP28 deal calls for global transition away from fossil fuels

A new deal has been agreed at COP28, which, for the first time, calls on all countries to contribute to a move away from using fossil fuels.

Nearly 200 countries at COP28 have agreed the new global deal. The text recognises the need for deep, rapid and sustained reductions if humanity is to limit temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

The BBC reports that "This is significant because it's the first time there's been explicit mention in a COP agreement of reducing use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) - the main driver of climate change."

London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) has reported that since its launch in 2018, the TX has prevented more than 200,000 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions from entering the earth's atmosphere.

In addition, LEVC's TX has travelled more than 700 million miles globally, with the company producing more than 10,000 of its revolutionary electric TX taxis, which have been sold throughout the world.

In London, the TX has now overtaken the diesel-powered TX4 as the most common black cab, with more than 7,500 TXs operating on the streets of the capital.

According to information uncovered in a poll by the Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA), the decision to push back the ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars to 2035 has caused significant uncertainty in the industry and could lead to a loss of over £100 million of investment in the UK.

In his watering down of key green policies, Rishi Sunak also said there would be no new taxes on meat or flights and weakened targets on improving energy efficiency and the phasing out of fossil fuel boilers.

Grant funding opens for decarbonisation projects

The latest round of funding through the Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) competition has opened today has opened for applications and sees an increased available grant amount per winner of up to £45,000 per project.

This round of funding will look at several different areas including ways to decarbonise airport operations and ways to better use artificial intelligence (AI) to make transport cheaper and quicker.

Twenty net zero technology projects have been awarded a share of £89 million government and industry funding. Projects include hydrogen-powered off-road vehicles, a new lithium scale-up plant and new EV battery systems.

The projects include include four collaborative R&D projects, five scale-up projects to assess if businesses in the automotive sector are ready for growth, and seven feasibility studies to prepare projects to develop large-scale manufacturing facilities in the UK.
