Policy gaps in transport decarbonisation to be identified

Zemo Partnership is holding a forum for members to identify gaps in the policy framework for decarbonising UK road transport and propose actionable solutions.

Commissioned by the European Climate Foundation (ECF), Zemo has been asked to build on elements of the Delivery Roadmap for Net Zero Transport (which it published last December) and to define a ‘Map of Missing Policies’ needed to accelerate UK road transport’s transition to net zero.

Transport for London’s (TfL) commitments on climate action have been recognised with the gold standard from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

SBTi validated TfL’s near and long-term emission reduction targets, and net-zero target in line with limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Europcar Mobility Group UK has joined forces with local councils to plant trees across some of the biggest UK cities, helping to improve the cities’ green spaces and air quality, whilst boosting local ecosystems and wildlife habitats.

Europcar colleagues have taken part in planting schemes in London, Glasgow, Cardiff and Nottingham, planting 4,500 young saplings, as part of future woodland creation projects.

Engineius saves over 10 million tonnes in CO2 emissions since launch

Vehicle movement specialist Engineius has reported that it has saved fleets over 10 million tonnes in CO2 emissions since it launched in 2018 by not using chaser vehicles.

Research conducted by Engineius with a major utility business highlighted that using chaser vehicles resulted in 24 miles driven for every 10 miles required. These findings ensured that Engineius adopted a different approach when drivers are moving between pick-up and drop-off sites.

The guidance sets out seven key principles to inform policy on delivering net zero transport – emphasising the importance of an economy-wide, whole-systems approach, and of maximising the many opportunities for the UK.

The Climate Change Committee has said that only a third of the emissions reductions required to achieve the country’s 2030 target are currently covered by credible plans.

In more positive news, the Committee has said that the country’s emissions are now less than half the levels they were in 1990. This is largely due to the phase out of coal and the ramping up of renewables.

But to continue to decarbonise the UK, the Committee said that action also needs to be taken across transport, buildings, industry and agriculture.

Zemo Partnership has announced the full membership of the new independent Council for Net Zero Transport, which is chaired by Lord Deben, former Chair of the Climate Change Committee.

With the General Election imminent, the Council for Net Zero Transport is well placed to support the new Government as it refocuses on the challenge of delivering net zero and maximising the benefits to UK Plc from the transition.

Over half (56%) of fleet managers do not consider the European Union’s (EU) Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) to be a major incentive for improving sustainability measures, including how businesses collect CO2 emissions data, according to Alphabet International's second European Fleet Emission Monitor (EFEM) report.
