November sees the UK host the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, to accelerate action towards climate change goals.

The UK is committed to working with all countries and joining forces with civil society, companies and people on the frontline of climate change to inspire climate action ahead of COP26, where the decarbonisation of transport will be high on the agenda.

Stellantis has announced it has complied with the UK’s Vehicle Emissions Trading Scheme (VETS) – more commonly known as the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate – for both cars and vans in 2024.

The company has 30 electric cars and vans on sale in the UK across 11 brands, and has said it has achieved this without resorting to alternative ways of complying.

Forty-seven per cent of fleets who have transitioned to EVs report that it has positively impacted their business, according to new data from Ayvens in the UK.

Analysing data from its survey of over 250 fleet decision-makers across some of the largest fleets in the UK (250 vehicles or more), Ayvens found that government regulations (44%) and climate change (44%) are the biggest drivers of fleet decarbonisation for fleets who have switched to EVs when compared to the average fleet operator (38% and 34%).

Electric car sales predicted to increase to 440,000 in 2025

EV leasing company DriveElectric has forecast that electric car sales in the UK will increase to 440,000 in 2025, representing 24% of 1.84 million total new car sales.

This is a 4.4% increase compared to electric car sales in 2024, equating to 19.6% of the total new car market last year (381,970 units).

However, this forecast of electric cars representing 24% of total sales this year means that the 2025 ZEV mandate target of 28% will be missed.

A group of organisations that represent UK charge point operators, manufacturers, service providers, and other related companies have issued a coordinated call on the Government to urgently recommit to existing EV sales targets.

The joint warning from BEAMA, ChargeUK, REA and UKSIF urges the Government not to cave to demands to water down the commitment for vehicle manufacturers to sell a minimum of 22% zero emission vehicles in 2024, rising to 80% in 2030 and 100% in 2035.

Latest figures from the SMMT show that battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations, rose for an eleventh successive month this November, up 58.4% to 38,581 units, representing 25.1% of the overall market, which the SMMT says is driven by heavy manufacturer discounting.

With the best market share since December 2022, November is just the second month this year in which BEV uptake has reached mandated levels, albeit against the backdrop of a declining overall market.
