A project which will explore the role of autonomous heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in the UK from the perspective of fleet operations has secured funding from the government and industry.

The study by the eFREIGHT Autonomous consortium aims to identify potential use cases, assess commercial viability, and examine the infrastructure and legislative frameworks required to enable autonomous trucking in the UK.

The Department for Transport has announced that self-driving vehicle pilots have been fast tracked so they start in England from spring 2026.

Companies will be able to pilot small scale taxi- and bus-like services without a safety driver for the first time – which could be available to members of the public to book via an app – before a potential wider rollout when the full Automated Vehicles (AV) Act becomes law from the second half of 2027.

A consortium of five industry partners has successfully completed the UK's latest autonomous driving (AD) research project.

Called 'evolvAD', the project builds on previous Nissan-backed projects in the UK - HumanDrive and ServCity.

It ends an intensive eight-year period during which more than 16,000 autonomous miles were driven across the country's motorways, urban centres, residential streets and countryside, with zero accidents.

£1.3 million in joint UK government and industry funding has been awarded to local authorities and regional transport operators to study how self-driving vehicle technology can improve local transport in remote, rural, and urban areas.
