Regulations that would allow hydrogen-powered tractors, diggers and forklifts to be used on roads in Great Britain have been set out in a new consultation.

Technology and Decarbonisation Minister, Anthony Browne, said: "Allowing hydrogen-powered tractors, diggers and forklifts to use our roads is a common-sense move to help reduce emissions.

"These proposals are an important part of our plan to decarbonise transport in the UK, with skilled jobs in British companies helping roll out this cutting-edge hydrogen technology, making it more affordable and commonplace."

Mannok Build has entered into an agreement with Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) to explore the integration of Hydrogen Fuel Cell HGVs into its fleet.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) outlines the partnership's objective to provide Mannok with trial vehicles to test the application of HVS hydrogen fuel cell HGVs on its fleet, when they become in late 2025. Following this phase, Mannok will be in a favourable position to initiate the conversion of part of its fleet to these zero-emission HGVs.

Wales & West Utilities has found that First Hydrogen’s fuel-cell vehicle experienced no decrease in performance or range when operating in colder temperatures during initial stages of its trial of the van.

Data collected from onboard telematics, over a combined distance of 1,029 km, show the vehicle has been operating for between 6 and 7 hours per day in temperatures of between 2°C and 17°C, without impacting range.

The trials will continue to the end of the month and will cover one of the most demanding periods for WWU as winter weather increases emergency call outs.

Wales & West Utilities (WWU) has commenced a one month trial with a hydrogen powered van from First Hydrogen.

First Hydrogen’s hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle (FCEV) has been designed to meet the needs of fleet operators, such as WWU, who are seeking a zero emissions vehicle that can manage long distances, carry heavy payloads and tow, with fast refuelling. First Hydrogen’s FCEV achieves more than 630km or 400 miles on a single refuelling.

The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) is reporting that some fleet operators are starting to “take hydrogen seriously” as a fuel option because of issues they have encountered in operating electric vans.

Paul Hollick, chair at the organisation, said that the forthcoming arrival of the Vauxhall Vivaro-e Hydrogen – really the first practical hydrogen-powered panel van available in quantity in the UK – was providing fleets with the potential opportunity to follow a multi-fuel, zero emissions strategy, although several major challenges remained.

Wales & West Utilities (WWU) will trial First Hydrogen’s hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles (FCEV) later this month, as well as form partnerships that will establish a local hydrogen ecosystem.

The vehicles will operate from WWU’s Swansea depot, as part of the business’ fleet of 1,300 vehicles, which are deployed across Wales and the south west of England. The FCEV will support network engineers to make customer call outs and undertake repair and maintenance work.

Vauxhall has partnered with Ryze Hydrogen to develop hydrogen charging infrastructure solutions for fleet operators.

The UK-based, hydrogen infrastructure distributor Ryze will collaborate with Vauxhall to inform the development of a widespread hydrogen refuelling infrastructure for companies running UK fleets.

Vauxhall is currently planning to hold fleet evaluation trials on its Vivaro HYDROGEN vehicle during 2024, with orders for the hydrogen version of the Movano also received, ahead of first customer deliveries in 2025.

The government has announced £7 million to continue its Tees Valley hydrogen transport hub project, with the funding awarded to fuel distributer Exolum to build a publicly accessible green hydrogen refuelling station near Middlesbrough.

This will initially serve at least 25 new zero emission heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) making deliveries.

The government-funded Tees Valley hydrogen transport hub is the first of its kind in the country, showing how green hydrogen can be utilised in transport.
