Queen's Speech: UK will get regulator to scrutinise environmental law

The Queens Speech, delivered today, 14 October, has confirmed that the UK will enshrine in law environmental principles for the first time.

The pledge will make up part of the long-awaited Environment Bill, which was one of 22 bills to be introduced in the speech.

Also announced in the Queen’s Speech was details of a new ‘world-leading’ independent regulator to scrutinise environmental policy and law, investigate complaints and take enforcement action.

Southampton puts forward clean air measures without a charging zone

Southampton City Council has published its Proposed Business Case with measures to provide clean air by 2020 without the need for a charging zone.

The Council says that work already underway has significantly reduced nitrogen dioxide pollution over the last three years by 24 per cent in some of the most polluted areas.

It says that £15m worth of projects including introducing cleaner city buses, a low emission taxi incentive scheme; and cleaner fuels and equipment at Southampton’s port have all been successful in reducing nitrogen dioxide in the city.
