Report reveals improvement in London air quality

A new report has revealed that air quality in London has improved faster and more dramatically that the rest of the UK.

In 2016, average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were much higher in London than the rest of the UK. However, in London the concentrations have fallen much quicker than in the rest of the country.

Cardiff Council has revealed that air quality data for 2022 shows that the city's air is getting cleaner compared with pre-pandemic levels.

However, the council has acknowledged that more work needs to be done.

There are a variety of different air quality monitoring stations across the city that monitor a range of pollutants, including Nitrogen Dioxide(NO2)and Particulate Matter (PM10and PM2.5).

Each local authority in Wales has a legal duty to monitor pollutant levels and report the findings and mitigation measures, to Welsh Government every year.

Councils invited to bid for £6m air quality grant

Local authorities across England can now apply for a share of £6 million in the latest round of air quality grants which deliver projects to improve air quality.

The annual Air Quality Grant helps councils develop and implement measures that reduce the impact of air pollution on people’s health. Since 2010, more than £53 million has been awarded across more than 500 projects through the scheme.

Mayor of London expands scrappage scheme to all Londoners

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced the expansion of its vehicle scrappage scheme to every Londoner affected by ULEZ, along with a host of other significant changes.

This means from Monday, 21 August, every Londoner with a non ULEZ-compliant car will be eligible for a £2,000 grant.

Small businesses and sole traders will be able to receive up to £21,000 in grants to scrap up to three vans, and charities will be able to receive up to £27,000 in grants to scrap up to three minibuses.

London scrappage scheme opens up to other small businesses

The ULEZ scrappage scheme has been expanded so that all small businesses registered in London with fewer than 50 employees are eligible. Previously just sole traders and micro businesses with up to ten staff were eligible.

The Mayor of London launched the scrappage scheme in January 2023 to support London based smaller businesses, sole traders and charities, Londoners on lower incomes and disabled Londoners to replace their older, more polluting vehicles with greener alternatives.

The Mayor of London and TfL's vehicle scrappage scheme has allocated £13.5m for drivers of vans and minibuses, the majority going to help small businesses scrap their polluting vehicles to comply with the ULEZ.

More than £4m has been committed to Londoners who own non-compliant cars and motorcycles.

Overall, 4,833 applications have been approved through the scheme, with £17,727,500 committed to date.

The government has launched a consultation, seeking views on a revised Air Quality Strategy which outlines how councils in England should use their existing powers and responsibilities more effectively to deliver improvements to air quality.

The draft strategy outlines the actions councils can undertake to improve air quality, and reduce emissions of fine particulate matter.

It also provides a framework to enable local authorities to make the best use of their powers and deliver for their communities
