Feedback is being sought on government’s proposals for the new Pumpwatch scheme which would see all fuel stations across the country legally required to share real-time price information.

Under the new proposals, forecourts across the country will be legally required to share live information on their pump prices within 30 minutes of any change in price, which could save drivers 3p per litre on fuel by helping them find the best deal at the pump.

The Competition and Markets Authority is to be granted new powers to help improve competition in the road fuel market and protect consumers from unfair prices.

Under new amendments to the Digital Markets, Competition & Consumers Bill, the CMA will become the body responsible for closely monitoring road fuel prices and reporting any sign of malpractice to the government. The move aims to help improve competition in the market, making sure customers across the country are given a fair choice of prices when they buy fuel.

The Chancellor has announced that fuel duty will be frozen and the 5p over litre reduction will be maintained for a further year, in his Spring Budget.

Fuel duty was cut by 5ppl in March last year by the then Chancellor, Rishi Sunak. This was meant as a temporary measure due to record pump prices at the start of last year and was due to end this month.

According to the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR), fuel duty could rise by 23% next April which will be the largest rise in the fuel duty rate in history. This would add 12p a litre to the cost of petrol and diesel.

Although there was no mention of any increase to fuel duty in the Autumn Budget - and the Chancellor Jeremey Hunt has since said the government has made "no decision" on the matter, the Office of Budget Responsibility believes the announcement will be made in the Spring.

Fuel consumption is now the number one priority for UK car buyers, with 57% declaring it as one of their most important factors when considering their next vehicle purchase, a new study by CarGurus has revealed.

Fuel consumption (57%) relegates reliability (55%) to second on the list of buyers’ concerns, ahead of road tax (25%), which has climbed from sixth to become Brits’ third most significant consideration as the cost of living continues to increase. Design/style and passenger/luggage capacity have slipped from third and fourth to fifth and sixth respectively.

The UK Government has given approval to put on standby a pool of military drivers to be deployed if necessary to stabilise the fuel supply chain.

The military drivers will now receive specialised training before deploying, enabling them to seamlessly work with industry to address the supply chain pressures.

E10 - the new standard grade of petrol - is now available at fuel courts.

E10 petrol is blended with up to 10% renewable ethanol and made up of materials such as low-grade grains, sugars and waste wood, making it greener than existing petrol. Its use could cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year, which is the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off of UK roads.

ŠKODA has said that all the brand’s new models – and those dating back to 2001 – are fully compatible with E10 unleaded petrol, which will become the standard petrol grade from September.

Compatibility with E10 petrol has been a legal requirement for all new cars sold in the EU since 2011 and all ŠKODA models built since 2001 have been designed to run on E10. Bioethanol absorbs carbon dioxide and is a mixture of ethanol and petrol and is made from a range of materials including grains, waste wood and sugars.
