Mercedes-Benz invests €3 billion in new engine technology

News

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed an investment of approximately €3 billion in new technology to improve the emissions and efficiency of its internal combustion engines.

The move comes in anticipation of stricter EU emissions targets, with Mercedes-Benz becoming the first manufacturer to put diesel vehicles on the market that already fulfil the future Real Driving Emissions (RDE) requirements.

The market launch of the newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine OM 654 is in the new E-Class, with the E220d now consuming as little as 3.9 litres of fuel per 100.

In addition to good fuel consumption, DEKRA has also confirmed that the E220d emits less NOx than the limit of 80 mg/km on all applicable RDE routes.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler board of management member for group research and Mercedes-Benz cars development, said: “Our customers’ trust is very important to us and we take our responsibility to the environment very seriously. That’s why we decided five years ago to invest massively in the further development of diesel technology. But we are also continuously making our gasoline engines more efficient and more environment-friendly; because high-tech combustion engines will remain the backbone of individual mobility until the widespread market success of electric vehicles. For this reason, we are investing a total of about three billion euros to ensure further improvements in fuel consumption and emissions – in both future and current vehicles.”
