Toyota Prius hybrid and Honda CR-V cars kept longer

According to a recent iSeeCars study, owners of the Toyota Prius hybrid maintain their cars longer than any other model but one.

The study tracked the percentage of original owners who kept their new-vehicle purchases for longer than 10 years. The top five vehicles for long-term ownership were found to be Toyotas and Hondas.

The Prius came in at second place, with 28.5 per cent of original owners keeping their cars for 10 years of longer. At first place, the Honda CR-V crossover prevailed, with 28.6 per cent of original owners keeping their car for at least 10 years.

Including the Prius and CR-V crossover, the top five included the Toyota RAV4 which garnered 28.2 per cent, the Highlander crossover which amassed 26.5 per cent and the Honda Odyssey minivan, with 25.6 per cent.

The findings of the study found that Honda and Toyota occupied the top 15 ranks, apart from number 11 which was taken by the Sabura Forester with 22.9 per cent of owners keeping the vehicle for 10 years.

Cars that are 10 years old average about 150,000 miles, and there are still concerns about the longevity of hybrid cars. However, the study indicates that many Prius hybrids have surpassed the 10 year mark, suggesting hybrid cars have a strong long-term reliability.

Phong Ly, iSeeCars CEO, said: "There are a rather large contingent of Toyota Prius owners who are happily touting the fact that their cars have logged 100,000 miles or more.”
