All London taxis to be zero emission capable by 2018

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that all newly registered taxis in London must be zero emission capable by 2018, with private hire vehicles following suit from 2020.

The move comes as part of ongoing plans to reduce emissions and improve the capital’s air quality and become the world’s first Ultra Low-Emission Zone by 2020.

Under the new rules, no new diesel taxis will be licensed in London, and newly licensed private hire vehicles in 2018 and 2019 must be fitted with a Euro 6 compliant engine.

TfL has set target of 9,000 zero emission capable taxis by 2020, and secured £65 million of funding to facilitate this.

Taxi drivers will be eligible for up to £5,000 to decommission their vehicle once it reaches ten years old, as well as a further £5,000 available via the plug-in car grant through the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: “The taxi and minicab trades have a crucial role to play in helping to improve London's air quality. We understand this will take time and that is why we are giving financial assistance to help clean up these vehicle fleets.

“The Ultra Low Emission Zone is the most ambitious measure of its kind in the world and we need everyone on board for it to be a success.”
