Driverless car technology tested on UK roads

News

The design for the first driverless cars are due to be tested in Greenwich and is one of four trials currently ongoing in the UK.

The pods have been designed in a similar fashion to the electric passenger shuttles that are currently in service at Heathrow Airport, but will not require dedicated tracks to operate on.

In addition to Greenwich Automated Transport Environment (Gateway), three other trials will take place in Bristol, Coventry and Milton Keynes. The project has been provided with £8m in funding from government agency Innovate UK.

From July, seven pods are expected to be tested on the surrounding pavements of the Greenwich Peninsula near the O2 Arena. Routes are likely to include residential areas such as the North Greenwich tube station and businesses around the O2.
