Ceres partners up with Nissan to develop EV range extender

News

Fuel cell technology specialist Ceres Power is set to work with Nissan to develop a range extender for electric vehicles (EV).

The news come after a consortium was granted £772,000 from Innovate UK and The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to develop EV technology. Nissan and Ceres will also work alongside M-Solv to develop a compact, on-board solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) to address the issue of range in electric cars.

Ceres hopes that by improving the range, the adoption of EVs will become more mainstream and will significantly accelerate the market.

Phil Caldwell, Ceres’ chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be working with Nissan and M-Solv to enable an all-electric vehicle with a longer range and shorter refuelling time. In addition, this project broadens the applications for Ceres Power’s SteelCell technology into the automotive industry as well as using alternative fuels such as biofuels.”

Ceres will work alongside Nissan for an initial 21 months to develop the SOFC.
