Nearly half of ‘expert’ respondents expect their next car to be an EV, survey suggests

A LowCVP survey found that nearly half of respondents expect their next car to either be a battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, with 14 per cent already driving a car with alternative drive train technology.

The survey questioned 303 respondents who mainly work for member or associate organisations of the LowCVP, a multi-stakeholder Partnership involving government, motor and energy industries, NGOs, academics and road user groups working to promote the uptake of low carbon fuels in the UK.

The majority of respondents also expected to be driving a hydrogen powered vehicle beyond the next 20 years. 91 per cent were aware of Formula E, the electric vehicle racing championship, with 69 per cent saying they thought the presence of Formula E in the UK will have a positive impact in the use of low carbon vehicles.

Andy Eastlake, LowCVP’s Managing Director, said: “The survey results show that the LowCVP’s project and programme activities are focusing on the right areas, but that there is still a great deal of work to do.

“It also shows that there are a wide range of technologies which expert stakeholders think could play a part in the future. It’s important, I think, that policy focuses on cutting carbon and remains as ‘technology neutral’ as possible, to allow this variety to thrive.”
