Toyota unveils solar-hybrid Prius

News

Toyota has revealed that its next-generation of the Prius plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) will have the option of a built-in solar roof that will produce energy to help charge the car and power its appliances.

The model is set to be the world’s first solar-charging production vehicle and is due to be released in Japan and Europe this autumn.

The Prius PHV can travel up to 60 km on a charge without using its petrol engine, more than double the 26.4km range of the current model.

Toyota will not be able to introduce the solar model to the US market, until it finds another form of reinforced glass sheeting that passes US rollover crash tests. It is currently working on finding a solution and will introduce the US version of the car under Prius Prime.
