New battery extends BMW i3 range

BMW has announced that a new battery and ‘optimised driveline’ will extend the range of the BMW i3.
The new lithium-ion battery will have the same 22kWh capacity as the current model, but with a higher power density that allows for a longer range.
The i3 will reportedly benefit from a range of over 124 miles, compared to just under 100 miles in the current model.
The new battery will be available as a retro-fit for existing vehicles, and will also be fitted into the i3 range-extender, which utilises a small petrol engine to produce electricity on the go.
