VW’s EA288 engine also being investigated in emissions scandal

Volkswagen (VW) has confirmed that it is now investigating its EA288 2.0 litre diesel engine, which might also contain the ‘defeat’ software used to cheat emissions tests.

Initially VW said that only ES189 engines were effected, and if the EA288 engines are also implicated, it could increase on the 11 million cars on the road already confirmed to have used the defeat software.

In a statement, VW stressed that newer Euro 6 complaint EA288 engines would not be affected, but that Euro 5 compliant versions sold from 2012 onwards were now being investigated.
